The Shins

Santa Barbara’s “rainy” weather has me digging through my Rainy Day playlist. A band that dominates this playlist is one of my all time favorites, The Shins. They are an American band who originated in 1996, but are still performing today. As much as I love mellow music like Bon Iver and other calm melodies, The Shins are my favorite, because although their music is very mellow, it is also exciting, and has rhythm.

My all time favorite song by The Shins is Pink Bullets. It is the perfect song, because if you are happy, it sounds so good, that it makes you happier. However, if you are having one of those days where you need to put in your noise canceling headphones in hopes of canceling out more than just the noise of the outside world, this song will be the perfect escape. It will be the perfect soundtrack to your angst, without making you fall deeper into the darkness. All in all, great song.

Check out the music video. I think it is adorable.

The two songs tied for second place in my book are both songs by The Shins, but featured on the Garden State soundtrack (movie worth watching.)  This soundtrack is where I discovered them, and I am forever grateful. The first song is called New Slang, and I would say it is one of The Shins’ most popular songs, for good reason. Once again, it is very calm, but it is the perfect song to comfort yourself. I love playing this song in the car, because I swear it sounds better when you have it playing out of all the speakers while your hands are out the windows, feeling the air. The second song is called Caring is Creepy. It is definitely less mellow than the other songs, with more of a chaotic sound, without being overwhelming. Of the three, this is the song I would choose to play around my friends, because they would not be able to tell that this band is my rainy day/angsty favorite.

As always, here are the songs listed above:
